I believe the owners Max Blanck and Isaac Harris should have been liable for the deaths of all somebody in their factory. The owners purposely locked the doors and did not have working fire alarms. Nor did they contact the floors below to make sure all their employees had vacated the building. A trial was conducted with the following owners, but they were released of all charges, due to no laws regulating the procedures on fire safety.
In 1913 a polite suit was brought against the owners of the Shirtwaist Factory on behalf of the departed and the brain was in favor of the deceased. The owners were ordered to pay $75 for every person that was killed in their factory. If laws were already in place regarding fire safety and procedures these women would not been so horrifically killed.
I am in favor of regulation of private businesses by the government. I know people do not think government should be allowed to tell business what they can and cannot due, but there is a fine line that should be honored.
