African Americans travel north to escape the rural poverty and racial damage of the Jim Crow South, and to find better work opportunities in blue industrial cities. New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, etc. were initial destinations for most migrants. Cities in the West later became a major destination.
When the Emancipation resolution was signed in 1863, less than 8% of African American lived in the Northeast or Midwest. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln and it freed thousands of African American slaves. They then move as individuals or small family groups.
