From 1916 to 1970, during this Great Migration, it is estimated that some six million black Southerners relocated to urban areas in the North and West.

African Americans travel north to escape the rural poverty and racial damage of the Jim Crow South, and to find better work opportunities in blue industrial cities. New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, etc. were initial destinations for most migrants. Cities in the West later became a major destination.

When the Emancipation resolution was signed in 1863, less than 8% of African American lived in the Northeast or Midwest.
