If there were only intramural sports then my guess would be that the outperform athletes around the country would go to only true schools to play against each other in the intramural games. I also believe there would not be as many schools with such large athletic programs because all of the best athletes would not spread out as much as they do today. The process of going from college to the professional level would be different as well. Professional recruits would no longer pass to any tournaments, bowl games, or World Series because there would not be any.
